"Seek the strongest color effect possible… the content is of no importance."
Jo Jasper Dean’s painting technique combines the use of a centuries old traditional grisaille, with a contemporary color palette so enhanced it would test positive for steroids. Finding her inspiration in the natural environment, Dean adheres to the reality of defining the form of the subject she portrays but breaks free with an imaginative color palette of saturated and amplified colors. The interaction and tension between complementary colors detonates a visual explosion that is simultaneously stimulating and soothing to the viewer.
More than two dozen of Dean’s supercharged oil paintings are on view at PHD Gallery from June 8 through July 20, 2013, with a free public reception for the artist on Saturday, June 8, from 7:00 to 10:00 P.M.
Jo Jasper Dean’s images are inspired by direct observation of nature, developing the composition in the field through the camera lens. Her subjects include many examples of flora and fauna; cactus and trees, lizards and ostrich, berries and beans. In the studio, she creates value and color studies translating the composition she wishes to paint to her color palette. Each painting begins with a highly detailed, realistic grisaille under-painting in sizzling red. She then layers on intoxicating colors using expressive brushstrokes to capture the textures she sees, always leaving a hint of the grisaille visible.
“I enjoy painting in this style to convey my emotional connection to the images and to convey how I see scenes and subjects that move me.” ~Jo Jasper Dean
